A fun domino game to enhance
thinking, for
all ages…
The
game "Thinking dominoes" can be used as a teaching tool; for children
from the age of six or seven and upwards. One of the aims of the game is to encourage
learners to think on a super-ordinate level; and to help them to organize the information
they have about the world. On a simple
level it can also be used to reinforce reading skills. Alternatively it can simply be played for
enjoyment.
On the top half of each domino, is written a category name. On the bottom half, is displayed a picture which represents something from a different category. The main principle of the game is to match category names with pictures of things that belong in the category.
When
joining the dominoes, players must always place a picture half next to a word
half, or vice-versa. The picture must
always be appropriate for the category name to which it is being joined (and
vice-versa).
For example on the top half of one
domino appears the word "season"' and below this word, there is a
picture of a cow.
In this case, if a player wants to
match the word "season", they have to find a domino which shows -on
its bottom half- a picture of spring, summer, autumn or winter; and place it
with its picture next to the word "season". If they want to match the picture of the cow,
they have to find a domino on which is written – on the top half – the word
"animal".
The game comprises 12 categories. The names of which are as follows:
1.
Animal 2. Furniture 3. Number
4.
Color
5. Town
in 6. Jewish festival 7. Fruit 8. Direction
9.
Shape 10. Season 11. Natural element 12. Musical instrument
There are 48 dominoes in the game and each category name is written on four different dominoes. Corresponding to each category name are pictures of four different things that belong in that category. For example, to correspond with "animal" one domino has a picture of: a tiger, there is one with a picture of a donkey; one with a cow and one with a sheep.
